Elena Fabeiro Castro holds a degree in Geography, History, and Art from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). She has a wide professional experience in cultural management, particularly within the fields of art and contemporary culture. She has been exhibition curator and coordinator and worked as coordinator of the publications department at the Galician Centre for Contemporary Art (CGAC) in Santiago de Compostela. She has collaborated with Mímesis, a Portuguese publishing house specializing in contemporary culture based in Porto. She has been Managing Director of the María Martínez Otero Foundation (A Estrada, Pontevedra) and, currently Manager of the Artesanía de Galicia (Galician Crafts) Public Foundation, dependent on Xunta de Galicia, the autonomous regional government.
Fundación Pública Artesanía de Galicia was created in 2003 like a non-profit organization depending on Ministry of Employment, Trade and Emigration of the Autonomous Government of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia). It has as a mission to promote the brand Artesanía de Galicia “Crafts of Galicia” worldwide. The Fundación counts among its primary duties with the development of research lines aimed to specialize and develop processing techniques to improve the quality of craft products as well as optimizing the production process through innovation, design and quality as the basis for craft development. Its main purpose is to provide the artisan sector specialized infrastructure to enable development assistance programs, training, innovation, documentation, promotion, marketing and other aspects inherent to the culture of the crafts in Galicia. Artesanía de Galicia is a brand, owned by the Xunta de Galicia, representing professionals from the Galician craft sector. This label offers a wide range of products including decorative objects, fashion accessories, jewels, toys, kitchen utensils, musical instruments or items made from fishing nets, among others. All these pieces are made of materials such as traditional kinds of clay, wood, wool, silver and other metals, glass, leather, stone or paper. We propose combining traditional and contemporary crafts to create environments or looks with their own personality. Artesanía de Galicia also includes contemporary design products in which new materials, innovation and new technologies play a key role.
