Commercial and hospitality spaces share a condition that architecture has been slow to recognise: both are designed around experience. Retail exchanges products for emotion; hospitality exchanges time for memory. In both cases, space is not merely the setting for the transaction, but its raw material.

In this talk, El Departamento draws on its experience of using retail as a field of research: a programme defined by intense narrative demands, extreme speed and immediate cultural exposure, requiring architecture to perform with precision and without a safety net. This pressure has generated a body of knowledge around spatial experience that extends beyond the commercial realm and opens up new possibilities within hospitality.

A third dimension now brings these two industries even closer together: the building of community. Today’s most relevant brands and hotels are no longer competing solely for customers, but for devoted communities. Space no longer simply represents an identity; it creates one.

A reflection on how architecture can shape experiences, build collective identity and forge connections that endure long after we have left a space.
