What makes a space make us feel good? Architecture can transform the way we experience a place through essential elements such as light, colour, materials, vegetation and our relationship with the landscape. But it can also do so through a design approach that is conscious of its context, its resources and what is already there. Today’s travellers seek wellbeing and increasingly prioritise meaningful experiences over consumption, and the spaces they inhabit need to respond to this shift.

Drawing on Kimpton Las Mercedes and other projects such as Hotel Mercer and the Panticosa Spa, Belén Moneo will reflect on an approach to architecture in which nature, perception and sustainability are part of the same pursuit, forming a long-term design strategy.

From urban settings to natural landscapes, the talk will explore different ways of understanding wellbeing: colour and light as elements capable of transforming perception; nature as part of everyday experience; and sustainability as a way of working with climate, materials, heritage and the resources inherent to each place.

A reflection on wellbeing as an architectural quality, and on architecture’s ability to create spaces that connect with their surroundings and with the people who inhabit them.
